Jeffrey Briar is the Director of the Laughter Yoga Institute based in Laguna Beach, California. An enthusiastic, articulate and engagingly positive teacher, Mr. Briar is one of the leading American disciples of Dr. Madan Kataria, the world-renowned exponent of Hasya (Laughter) Yoga. Mr. Briar is also the founder of the first Laughter Club in the world outside of India to meet seven days a week. The Laguna Laughter Club has had more than forty-thousand participants, and has been featured extensively in both local and international press. Mr. Briar is probably the most experienced Laughter Exercise Leader in the world outside Asia.
Mr. Briar leads workshops in Hasya (Laughter) Yoga at yoga studios and retreat centers as well as corporate and community events. He certifies others as leaders and teacher-trainers in the Laughter Yoga/therapeutic laughter modality in two-day and five-day training programs.
In addition to his work in Laughter Yoga, Jeffrey Briar has over 35 years of experience as a teacher of traditional Hatha Yoga. He first studied under Swami Turiyananda (Director of the Integral Yoga Institute of Santa Cruz) and later taught on the staff of the University of California, Santa Cruz. Briar also has more than 20 years of training in the Integral/Satchidananda, Sivananda, Kundalini, Iyengar and Ashtanga schools. He has led Yoga classes and master classes for teachers throughout the USA, Canada and Europe and is on the faculty of Irvine Valley College.
Mr. Briar is an accomplished comedic actor who has performed throughout the United States and Europe on stage and screen. While Laughter Yoga does not involve traditional humor or comedy, Mr. Briar’s knowledge of the pure joy which laughter brings to audiences enhances his effectiveness as a speaker and brings another level of understanding as he guides others in the learning and practice of Laughter Yoga.
Kathryn Burns, CLYT
Kathryn Burns is a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher and State-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, enabling her to practice and teach a vast spectrum of healing modalities. She received her Laughter Yoga Leader Diploma in 2005, and her Teacher Certification (from Dr. and Mrs. Kataria) a few years later. Kathryn leads laughter sessions regularly on the beach with the Laguna Laughter Club.
Kathryn received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Irvine in Theatre Arts with a minor in French Literature, and has performed internationally as an actress in China, Germany, Scotland, England and France. She is currently on the faculty of Irvine Valley College, CA. She has taught Hatha Yoga for over thirty years and received certification from Yoga Works, CA.
Kathryn has facilitated several Laughter Yoga Teacher Trainings as Personal Assistant to the movement’s founder, Dr. Madan Kataria. Her experience includes facilitating creativity workshops, part of her passionate personal vision of heart-opening holistic healing.
Ruthe B. Gluckson, CLYT
Ruthe Busch Gluckson is a graduate of the first Laughter Yoga Teacher’s Training in America presented by Dr. Kataria in March 2006. She has worked for many years with the world’s most renowned leaders in the Human Potential Movement, including Fritz Perls, Alan Watts, George Bach, Arthur Janov, J. Krishnamurti; and her husband of 38 years, psychiatrist Leonard Gluckson, M.D. Ruthe co-authored Teaching Your Wings to Fly with her dance therapy mentor Anne Lief Barlin; and Moving Experiences with Jeffrey Briar, Director of The Laughter Yoga Institute.
Ruthe’s five decades in education have impacted populations of all ages. She studied Mime with Marcel Marceau. She was part of the “Artists in Schools” Program of the National Endowment for the Arts, and was recently honored as Outstanding Woman of the Year by her alma mater, California State University at Los Angeles.
Robert K. Gluckson, CLYL
Robert Gluckson has two Master’s degrees (one in Popular Culture and one in Communications) and a Bachelor’s degree (in Journalism). He became a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader in 2005. He has been an Adjunct Professor of: Mass Media, Film, English, and Art History at colleges in Washington, California, Oregon and Montana. His education also includes clown training at Wavy Gravy’s “Camp WinnaRainbow”
Robert incorporates laughter to meet organizational goals for a wide range of programs including weddings, fundraisers and conferences. His bag of skills includes performance art, clowning, cartooning, puppetry, and leadership of the Dances of Universal Peace. With his experience as a marketing consultant, writer, and teacher of all ages (from kids to college), Robert supports creativity, group decision-making, and individual empowerment. He is currently sharing Laughter Yoga and Dances of Universal Peace on the island of Hawaii.
David Sullenger, CLYL
Dave is a graduate of the first Laughter Yoga Leader Training given in Orange County, California in October, 2005. After completion of his certification, he promptly took on the co-leadership of the Laguna Laughter Club. Dave recently celebrated his eleventh year of leading laughter club sessions – he has led laughter exercises more than 35,000 times.
Born in Joplin, Missouri, Dave received Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Art from the California State Universities in Fullerton and Long Beach respectively. Dave was featured in Carol Duval’ s Arts & Crafts Documentary on HGTV. An accomplished woodworker and craftsman, Dave regularly exhibits his original works at Laguna’s “Sawdust Arts Festival.” Despite his fine craft work, Dave never rests from his practice of leading individuals and groups in experiencing the benefits of Therapeutic Laughter. Dave attended the first Laughter Yoga Teacher Training ever presented by anyone other than Dr. Kataria – that was delivered by our own Jeffrey Briar, in March 2011.
